Home or business

Advice for personal storage, business storage and everything in between.

What affects the price

  • Location: city-centre facilities usually cost more than those further out
  • Size: bigger units cost more, but the price per square foot is often lower
  • Type: climate control, drive-up access and 24-hour access can add to the price
  • Demand: peak moving and student seasons can push prices up
  • Extras: insurance, admin fees, locks and packing materials

12 ways to pay less

  1. Declutter first. Sell, donate or recycle what you don’t need before paying to store it.
  2. Pick the right size. Use our size guide and pack tightly to use the full height.
  3. Compare the price per square foot or square metre across a few facilities.
  4. Look slightly further out. If you rarely visit, a less central site may cost less.
  5. Read introductory offers carefully. Find out the price you’ll pay once the offer ends.
  6. Ask about price rises. Some providers increase rates after you move in. Ask how often and how much notice you’ll get.
  7. Ask about longer-term or upfront discounts if you know how long you’ll need the space.
  8. Check insurance options. Compare the facility’s cover with your own home, renters or business policy.
  9. Ask about all fees: admin, deposit, lock, cleaning and late-payment charges.
  10. Skip climate control if you don’t need it, but use it for items that do (see our guide).
  11. Share a unit with family or friends, agreeing the terms in writing.
  12. Downsize or leave on time. Review what’s in storage regularly and give notice promptly.

VAT and taxes on storage

In the UK, self storage is generally subject to VAT at the standard rate, and in many EU countries VAT also applies. Check whether quoted prices include VAT. In the US, some states and cities charge sales tax on storage rental. Businesses may be able to reclaim VAT or deduct storage as an expense, so check with your accountant.

Watch out for

  • A low first-month price followed by a much higher monthly rate
  • Contracts that auto-renew for a fixed term
  • Insurance or protection cover added automatically
  • Notice periods that charge you for an extra month

Storage costs: frequently asked questions

How much does a storage unit cost?
Prices vary widely with location, size, type of unit and demand, so there’s no single answer. The best way to find out is to get quotes from a few local providers for the same size and compare the full monthly cost.
Are “first month free” or half-price offers worth it?
They can be, especially for short stays. Always check the regular monthly price, the minimum term and any fees, so you know the total cost.
Can a storage facility raise my rent?
Often yes. Many contracts allow price changes with notice. Ask how prices are reviewed before you sign, and compare again if your rate rises.
Is it cheaper to pay upfront?
Some providers give a discount for paying several months in advance. Make sure you understand the refund rules if you leave early.
