When storage helps during a move
- A gap between leaving your old home and getting the keys to the new one
- Renovating or decorating before you move everything in
- Moving abroad or into temporary accommodation
- Downsizing and not yet ready to sell or give away furniture
- Staging a home for sale by clearing clutter
Your three main options
- Self-storage unit: you (or your movers) take everything to a facility. Flexible and easy to visit.
- Portable container storage: a container is dropped at your home, you load it, and it’s stored at a depot or kept on your driveway.
- Removals company storage: many moving companies store your belongings in their warehouse between collection and delivery. Convenient, but you usually can’t access items until they’re delivered.
Plan the move in and out
- Book storage as soon as you know your dates, since facilities can be busy at peak moving times
- Pick a size using our size guide
- Pack the things you’ll need first at the front of the unit
- Keep a list of what’s in each box
- Check the notice period, so you aren’t charged for an extra month after you move out
Insurance during a move
Check what’s covered at each stage: on the removal truck, in storage and in transit again. Your mover’s cover, the storage provider’s cover and your own home insurance may each cover different parts, with different limits.
