Advice for personal storage, business storage and everything in between.

Your options

  • Self-storage unit: rent the smallest unit or locker that fits, near campus or near home.
  • Collection services: some companies collect boxes from your room and return them at the start of term. You pay per box or item.
  • Share a unit: splitting a unit with friends can cut the cost each, but agree in writing who pays what and who holds access.

Tips for students

  • Book early: demand peaks at the end of the academic year
  • Ask about student offers, and check the price after any offer ends
  • Use sturdy, same-sized boxes and label each one
  • Don’t store food, and make sure everything is clean and dry
  • Check your insurance: student contents policies don’t always cover storage

Student storage: FAQs

What size storage unit does a student need?
A small locker or a unit of around 25 sq ft (about 2.5 m², or 5 × 5 ft) usually fits boxes, a bike and a few small items from a student room.
Can I share a storage unit with friends?
Often yes, but the contract is usually in one person’s name, and they’re responsible for payment and access. Agree how you’ll split costs before you start.
